Noteworthy:
* The 14-year-old McKee made just his fifth career TA2 start Saturday and gained three spots from his fifth starting position to earn his first career podium.
* Brown, 16, made just his second TA2 start and finished one spot off the podium after debuting at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway in February with a solid eighth-place finish.
* After a pair of runner-up Pro-Am Challenge-class finishes in the season’s opening two events, Boes scored his first class victory of the season. It was his eighth Pro-Am win in the last two seasons. He also was competing among the TA2 Western Challenge entries in the field and topped them all, as well, to become the first driver to win both Pro-Am and Western Challenge classes in the same event. It was his second career Western Challenge, his first coming last July at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway.
* The 19-year-old Day was the top TeamSLR and M1 Racecars qualifier, earning the fourth spot on the grid. But contact on the opening lap sent him to pit lane for quick repairs and left him rallying for a 26th-place finish in just his second career TA2 start.
* Fellow M1 Racecars drivers Jared Odrick and Brody Goble joined Boes on the Pro-Am and Western Challenge podiums, respectively, each with runner-up finishes in class.
Tristan McKee, Driver, No. 28 Spire Gainbridge/SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro:
“It was interesting. I got off to a really good start. I went from fifth to third on the first lap and pretty much stayed there the whole race until Thomas (Annunziata) had an issue. It was a good race. I needed a little bit more for the 10 car there (winner Brent Crews). I’ve just got to work on a few things on my part and help make our cars a little bit better. But I really have to thank all my people – Spire Motorsports, Gainbridge, HendrickCars, all the TeamSLR guys who get this car to the track and helped me throughout the weekend. I’ve just got to thank all of them. They helped me a lot and to get here to begin with, and I’ve just got to thank them.”
Carson Brown, Driver, No. 8 PayCafe/Ebb Logistics/SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro:
“We started off really good – a little tight, but we knew it would come to us. Kind of the same thing we were trying to do at Sebring, just kind of to be there at the end, and that’s what we were going for. I fell back a little bit on the start, fell back to almost seventh, and then we were able to make some really good passes, ended up third, and then just fell back one spot on a restart and just couldn’t quite make that back up. We were definitely set up for the long runs but we didn’t have any of that today. Overall, just a big thank you to TeamSLR and the whole team, PayCafe, Ebb Logistics, Chevy, everyone that makes this happen.”
Barry Boes, Driver No. 27 Accio Data/SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro:
“I am just so happy to get to the top of the podium in both Pro-Am and the Western Championship. These guys in the Western Championship are incredible drivers. This is their home turf and it means a lot to be able to come out here with the camaraderie and to be able to win sometimes. In Pro-Am, I was looking back and watching what (Jared) Odrick was doing because he was the next guy in in class. I really had to keep my eye on a lot of cars back there, and I knew that Odrick was pushing, getting faster every lap that we were out there and that he was going to be coming. If we would have had more green flag racing, I would have seen him again. He and I are teammates in M1 Racecars, which have been fantastic all season. We both run with TRB in the Western Championship when we’re not combining a national event.”
Corey Day, Driver, No. 17 HendrickCars.com/SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro:
“I don’t really know why that happened, if he (Rafa Matos) had a problem or something was wrong. We’re up front, so I expected everyone to roll through turn one and turn two, and he didn’t. He had a lot of space between him and the cars in front of him, so I guess he was just a lot slower than I thought he was going to be and I just couldn’t stop in time. That kind of ruined our day, having to go to the pits to fix the damage. It was a shame because we had a really good car in practice and qualifying. I just want to thank HendrickCars.com, Chevrolet, everyone at TeamSLR for making this happen.”
